KitchenOwl Gone?

English

Does anyone know what has happened to Kitchenowl?

All I see is a 404 when I go to the Kitchenowl website (https://kitchenowl.org/), docs site (https://docs.kitchenowl.org/) or the author’s Github (https://github.com/TomBursch/kitchenowl/).

The creator’s GitHub account is in limbo. He can see everything just normal, but for everyone else it’s just a 404. GitHub support is informed but unresponsive.

There is a Matrix chat where the creator posts updates (although there is not much to update): KitchenOwl

There is no reason to believe that the latest version available on Docker Hub (0.7.7) is compromised in any way. If you want to play it safe use 0.7.6 (3 months old).

Why hasn’t he migrated to something more stable?

I wouldn’t say that GitHub is not stable. I hope we will learn what the reason was, I hope at least Tom will get to know what it was and I am sure he will take this into consideration.

Of course I cannot speak for him. My understanding is that he is considering this, but his priority at the moment is to find out and solve the reason for his shadowban on GitHub. Maybe he will move to another platform (I think Codeberg was mentioned once or twice), but changing the platform will no doubt result in additional work that needs to be planned as he is doing this in his spare time. The GitHub situation needs to be solved first as he needs this account also for work as I understand it.

A platform that’s down 10% of the time and that now has a reputation of locking people out of their accounts without reason for weeks at a time cannot, under any definition of the word, be considered “stable”.

I just… don’t get it. This whole community, we’re supposed to be building stuff for ourselves and each other, and for some reason people keep going to bat for a company that demonstrably holds every one of us in contempt.

Just… stop using their shitty tools already.

                      down 10% of the time

Anecdotally: As a part of my morning routine, I check Thousand Eyes to see what the ‘internet weather’ is doing. GitHub and Microsoft are usually down somewhere, in some form or fashion.

That is inaccurate to all hell.

Not to defend a microslop product but that monitoring platform sees one service as offline as the entire platform is offline.

The container registry going down does not effect the git forges or the webui but that site says it does.

He’s still right that it’s weird people like you are going to bat to defend them. Microsoft sucks. It must get tiring if you have to call out every inaccurate thing everyone says to try to tear them down. The important take-home message is that we need to tear them down, they suck.

You don’t see people bothering to defend Epstein, for example. Even though there’s lots of inaccurate stuff going around, there’s enough accurate stuff to be absolutely confident he was an absolute loathsome piece of shit not worth defending. Not worth the effort to defend. Why bother?

What do you see in Microsoft that you think is worth defending? Github is shit, and it’s evil. Let it go.

Yeah man, why would accuracy be important? They burn baby owls to fuel their cars too, so why would it be important to be accurate in statements?

If you’re going to shit on a company, come with receipts. Else you’re just reinforcing the idea that people will make shit up to discredit the company. It makes it easier to dismiss legit claims.

If I said that Israel was starting forest fires with space lasers, then also said they were committing genocide, the earlier claim lowers my credibility and makes it easier to dismiss the latter.

Pointing out inaccurate information is not defending something. It’s point out inaccuracies.

What do you see in Microsoft that you think is worth defending?

                                  Absolutely nothing.
I do agree GH since the purchase has gone to hell, the forced copilot plans are terrible, banning Devs because they live in sanctioned counties, locking out accounts with support not being able to restore them, the list goes on.
Those are reasons not to use GH

But missinformation is a bad thing to spread even if it supports what you believe.

                                  Can you be my boss?

My current boss says that any downtime counts because the services are supposed to work together and a single outage affects user experience. I like your approach of “if it’s not fully down it doesn’t count, fuck the users” better.
